The Golden Rules

The 5 golden rules that should never be broken in our opinion are as follows:

  1. Never buy a new mattress and put it onto a old spring base.
The reason is your base spring will have worn and by putting a new mattress (spring interior) on top this can buckle the weaker spring .The chances of the base spring and new mattress spring matching up together are so remote, it’s not going to happen. And if they were the same tension originally, one would have softened due to age.
  2. Never put a new mattress onto a slatted base unless it is suitable.
The reason for this is clear - you really don’t want your new mattress dipping in between the gaps between the slats.
  3. Never put a new mattress onto a firm base before checking it first.
Again, the reason for this is also very clear - you really don’t want your new mattress dipping into any holes and taking the wrong shape of a broken base. It’s unlikely that a firm base will break without you realising it, but it’s always best to check first to make sure. Normally a firm base lasts twice as long as a mattress. The mattress is the main cost of the bed, if you can re-use your base, you could save up to 25% of the bed cost, by buying the mattress only. However, it becomes a false economy if the base you are using is not up to the job.
  4. Never put a new mattress on to the floor.
The reason for this is you will dramatically reduce the air flow around the mattress and therefore not allowing it to breathe. A mattress that cannot breathe is likely to get damp and then mouldy. This can cause respiratory problems.
  5. Never put a new mattress on to a old frame before checking it first.
The reason for this is also very clear - you really don’t want your new mattress dipping in between any large gaps in between the slats. As a rule of thumb, the slats and gaps should be the same size - approximately 2 ½ “ to 3” each ( 6.5cm – 7.5cm).The other thing you should check is that the frame is built solid and that there is nothing sharp that will damage your new mattress.
